Color Your Nightmares

A Colouring Book Review

October 28, 20253 min
You'd think colouring would be a quiet activity... But in this house they all hum, and mumble and make a soundtrack to their drawing. Still, it's worth the loooong stretches of focused screen-free activity.

We have a lot of colouring books in the house (and plenty of random loose colouring pages). Most are hit and miss, but this Halloween colouring book gifted to us by my sister was a real hit. And since I had a few people ask about where the pages from the header image came from, I thought I’d write up a quick review.

The book is called "Zombies, Werewolves, Monsters & Horror: Color Your Nightmares " published by Chartwell Books.

The designs are detailed, though definitely not of the cutsy variety, so be aware that more sensitive children might not enjoy this as much as my two Halloween obsessed little zombies. When we got it the kids were nearly 5 and 8 years old. My daughter was a bit more picky about which one she wanted to look at, but my son loved it.

What I really liked was the paper quality. This is not some quickly from together amateur book. The pages are thick with a good weight and pleasant texture to them. I usually don't mind thin pages for quick daily colouring (half the time it's just my worksheet printouts 😂), but when you want to make the activity a bit more special with grownups involved too, the thicker pages were a nice treat.

Another thing I liked is the way the book handles the reverse side of each page. We’ve not had much bleed issue, so effectively you get a double sided design. The other sides are mostly simpler patterns, which is nicer for younger kids, or someone who likes more repetition in their colouring page.
