By nine or ten the challenge shifts from forming letters to keeping them neat across a whole page. This volume keeps the 3/8" ruling your child already knows, but removes the alternating line colours. Same line-size check, warm-ups, and alphabet reference as the earlier volumes, with a friendly mascot and plenty of room for custom stickers on the cover so children will love writing in this notebook.

When the challenge is keeping it neat

By this age most children have the letter shapes down. The new test is endurance: staying neat across a full page, a paragraph, a whole piece of writing, not just the first tidy line. This volume keeps the 3/8” size they already use confidently, on plain monochrome ruling without alternating line colours, with plenty of space to keep going so good handwriting becomes a habit.

What’s inside

  • Line-size check A page for the parent or teacher to check which line size is best suited for the child right now. Grades and age are only a guide and there’s nothing wrong with the child skipping ahead or needing a larger size to boost their confidence.

  • Pencil warm-ups Short tracing and pattern exercises before longer writing. Use these before working with the blank pages or do a line or two before each session. The extra lines on the warm up pages are filled with slightly harder patterns so children who used the previous volumes will find something new to challenge them.

  • Alphabet reference Uppercase and lowercase letters on one spread for quick reference. Each has also space for tracing and copying the letter shape. Included are stroke guides for each letter.

  • Blank ruled pages Plenty of empty lined pages for copy work, sentences, and everyday practice.

Is 3/8 inch still the right size?

Choose this volume if your child already writes comfortably on 3/8” lines and is ready for more independent handwriting practice. If they’re still settling into that smaller size, use Primary Handwriting (Vol 4) first. If 3/8” still feels tight, drop back to Handwriting Practice (1/2”) for now.

Not sure which size fits? Compare a school worksheet against the line-size check at the back, or our free line-size check download.

Frequently asked questions

Both use 3/8" ruling. Volume 5 is for slightly older writers (Grade 4 / Year 5) who already use that line height and need more room for longer writing, on plain monochrome lines without the alternating colours in Volume 4.

If your child already writes comfortably on 3/8" lines at school, you can start here. If they're still settling into the smaller size, use Volume 4 (Primary) or stay on Handwriting Practice (1/2") until the lines feel comfortable.

Longer writing. The blank ruled pages suit extended copy work, paragraph-length passages, spelling and sentence practice with more to write, and daily journalling that builds writing stamina. Choose Volume 4 if your child is _making the jump_ to 3/8" and needs to settle into the smaller size. Choose Volume 5 if 3/8" already feels natural and they simply need more space for longer pieces. You could also go by which dragon mascot your child likes more.

Yes, it works for both. The pages are plain ruled lines, so they suit print letters or early cursive equally. The style is up to you.

Intermediate Handwriting Notebook is planned as Volume 5 in the Writing Lines that Fit series. Volumes 1–3 are on Amazon now.

If school paper is noticeably narrower and your child writes comfortably on it, try Volume 6 (Advanced Handwriting Notebook) instead. Not sure which size fits? Every volume includes a line-size check at the back of the book, or use our free line size check download to compare paper samples before you switch.
